I’ll admit it – I was a skeptic. Sitting in my first coaching certification course, I inwardly cringed when the instructor started talking about “life purpose.” As a seasoned tech executive, I wanted concrete tools and measurable outcomes, not what seemed like abstract philosophical concepts.
But my journey as a coach has completely transformed my perspective. Working with leaders across industries, I’ve witnessed firsthand how understanding one’s purpose can become a practical superpower. Those who connect with their deeper “why” make decisions with more confidence, navigate challenges with greater resilience, and find meaning in their work that goes beyond traditional success metrics.
Purpose isn’t just a lofty ideal – it’s a daily compass. When we’re clear about our purpose, we naturally:
- Make choices that align with our values
- Stay motivated through difficulties
- Find meaning in routine tasks
- Build lasting resilience
I was recently reminded of purpose’s transformative power while working with a senior tech manager. In our final session, she shared that our purpose exploration had been the most valuable gift from our entire coaching journey. “It’s become my daily anchor,” she told me. “Whether I’m making decisions about my team or planning my day, I always come back to it.”
Looking back at my skeptical former self, I now know that purpose isn’t about finding some grandiose mission statement. It’s about uncovering each person’s unique way of contributing to the world and helping them align their actions with that deeper truth. When we get this alignment right, everything else tends to fall into place.
So I ask you: Do you know what your life purpose is?
If you’re curious to explore this question, here are some powerful questions to reflect on:
- What activities make you lose track of time?
- When do you feel most alive and energized?
- What patterns keep showing up in your life’s pivotal moments?
- What contribution do you want to make to the world?
- What would your 80-year-old self thank you for pursuing?
These questions can begin to unlock insights about your purpose, but sometimes the journey is deeper and more nuanced. Working with a coach can help you explore these questions more fully, challenge your assumptions, and create clarity about your unique purpose. Together, we can translate that purpose into a practical framework for decision-making and action.
